Feather Pedals Training Rides

for Cycle of Hope Metric Century

Beginning Saturday, February 27, 2027

For the 18th year, Feather Pedals is providing a training ride series to prepare beginning to experienced riders to ride a metric century. This year we are collaborating with Habitat for Humanity to host the 2027 Cycle of Hope ride coming May 23, 2027.

About the Conditioning Series

The Feather Pedals (FP) Training Series is organized by volunteers within the Valley Spokesmen Bicycle Club. The series is dedicated to providing encouragement to all riders (especially those new to group and distance cycling) to help them achieve their goals of completing a metric century. All rides are in the tri-valley area.  Over 12 weeks the rides will progress from an easy 20 mile orientation ride to a 50+ mile distance to ensure you can successfully finish the classic distance.  The start location changes every 4th ride and the times change as the rides get longer.

Who can Join Feather Pedals?

All levels of riders from beginners to experienced and ages welcome.  You do not need to be a VSBC member to ride up to three times per year, but we’d appreciate your support and you’ll appreciate the many benefits in being a member. For more information about becoming a VS member, click here.

Below are the upcoming Cycle of Hope Training Rides. You MUST register online for each ride (just click the ride in the list below).

Prepare For Riding

Ride Support

It is always recommended that riders be prepared to be self-supported (have bike tubes) and have someone to call to be picked up if necessary.

Ride Sweep: All training rides will have a "Sweep" - a designated cyclist to ride at the back to encourage and ensure that no one is left behind. They may NOT have the skills to change a flat tire for you.

SAG (Support and Gear): Select longer training rides may have SAG (a car) that can pick you up to take you back to the start. (Any rides with SAG will be noted).

Bike Safety

Know the Rules of the Road

All riders should be able to change their own flat tires on our rides.  This means having the tools and skills.  There are multiple ways to learn how to change a tire “before” you ride on a VS ride. Announcements will be made for flat tire training sessions.

Reminder: It’s recommended that all riders have a bike tune up at a local bike shop before starting the ride series.

Know the Route

Links to all the routes will be listed on the VS ride calendar.  The links will also be included in all pre-ride announcement emails to VS members who subscribe to receive emails.

All routes have a link to Ride with GPS which provides route details such as easy-to-read cue sheets, maps, elevation gains, etc - that can be printed or displayed on your smartphone.

You must print/download your own route sheet after the pre-ride announcement is sent on the Wednesdays to make sure you have the final route. Sometimes the posted routes are revised due to road condition, construction, etc.

See www.ridewithgps.com for details. Ride with GPS has for-fee membership options providing route navigation with turn-by-turn guidance with voice prompts.

STAY INFORMED

If you're signed up for the ride, you'll get any changes/cancellations for the ride. Be sure to check emails the night before and by 7:30 the morning of the ride for last minute cancellations.
